"Kubeck set for USC

El Segundo boys water polo star Matt Kubeck, the Daily Breeze Player of the Year, recently took a recruiting trip to USC and plans to sign Wednesday. Kubeck holds the career CIF Southern Section mark for career saves with 1,373.

"It makes me triple excited," said George Harris, the head coach of the El Segundo boys team and a USC alum. "It's the first player I've had who is going to my alma mater, and he's going to get great coaching and a great education."

USC added five more players to their recruiting class which brings them to twelve players thus far. These players are as follows:

Zayne Belal (Houston, TX), Brian Boswell (Ventura, CA), Matthew Burton (Mira Costa, CA), Cem Cerak (member of Turkish Junior and Senior National teams) and Elliott Samuels (Los Altos, CA).

How many of those 12 will actually make it in the program. they had 12 players last year and only 1 got a cap.

Actually, I think USC had something like 6 receive a cap last year. I believe their current roster shows them as sophomores now. The top D1 schools get more recruits than they can accomodate with caps and playing time but that is for each player to choose. As long as they know and appreciate that going in...

Except for the senior team player from Turkey...I've seen every one of those USC recruits play on a few occassion. I'd guess that at least 6-7 are pretty legit, and a few of those sophomores should be worried about keeping their cap net year. As for the others...they're all decent players, probably could have made some noise on a WWPA team, but at USC they'll get lost in the shuffle. I've heard Jovan doesn't cut players, so they'll be on the roster, have an opportunity to train, and maybe surprise. But as with many at this level, it'll be an uphill road. Their future as collegiate water polo players will depend as much on their staying power as on their talent...but isn't that really the case with any team?

More on the way

I don't doubt that he will sign at least five more, to make his class round out around 17. Any word on UCLA's Signees other than villa park goalie and Jorth?

Only Borrisof recieved a cap. And playing 2 minutes in a blow out win is not actually that awsome for a polo player. So many kids go to these schools becuase they recieved one email from an assistant coach? Does'nt anybody warn them about being a program player? I am not saying that they are not getting good talent and building their program, but I bet you half of them quit and could have enjoyed a great carrer at a WWPA or SCIAC school. So many of my friends were very legitimate coming out of high school, and went to a huge D1 school and carried the camera for two years and then quit, what a shame. Just to let players know there are other schools to play water polo at other than the MPSF, and you could probablly be an all american, and get a great education.

This discussion always comes up..these kids aren't dumb. They know the score. Jovan isn't making any promises. None of these guys are guarenteed anything other than the opportunity to be a part of one of the most successful collegiate athletic programs in the nation. From there it's going to be up to them. If they're not good enough...at least they'll know they tried. Of course they'll be done with water polo a lot sooner than they probably hoped, but that is their choice. They still get to go to a good school and get a good education so nothign really important is lost.
(If water polo is that important to them, they won't quit, no matter how little they get to play.)

Not saying the gluten of talent on 3-4 different teams is great for the sport, but what do these kids care about that, they're going to college to get a degree and have some fun playing polo, or watch it...what ever comes first. Either way, they'll still probably get a ring.

Your a right they probably will get a ring. But what is a ring worth when you dont earn it. It sounds more like a consolation prize for getting beat up on in practice and carrying the luggage. When someone's asks you about your national championship ring what story are you going to tell them. Ya I was there in my warm ups as a 5th year senior. Doesnt sound very entertaining. I guess it depends on where your priorities are but I think that too many kids get caught up in the idea of going to a top waterpolo school and being lost in a group of 50 high school all americans that make up the team. Just comes down to how much you want to play and when you want to play!
