There is a lot of Polo in Pennsylvania. The Erie area has many teams as does Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Reading, Cumberland Valley and there are likely several more that do not immediately come to mind. What area do you live in? We'll get you the contact information.

Pennsylvania has the largest polo population of all the Northeast states...the next closest large group of programs being Chicago, Michigan and Florida. You guys rock!

During the 1970s, the best high school boys water polo team on the entire east coast was Lower Moreland from suburban Philadelphia. Coached by Paul Barren, they defeated top teams from around the east, south and midwest, won two junior national men's tournament titles, and twice traveled to play in Europe. Half-a-dozen LMHS boys were All-Americans, including Paul's son Eric, who is now a practicing physician in Scranton. The LMHS girls weren't quite as good as the boys, but at least one LMHS girl, Patti Dix, was an All-American. Our boys and girls teams from North Carolina played the LMHS boys and girls, both here and in Philly, and we also played against strong squads from Mercersburg Academy and the Philadelphia Aquatic Club. The Mercersburg girls, several of whom were national champs in swimming, were very fast and quite good in water polo and one year copped the junior national women's tourney title -- I think it was in 1974. In the mid 1980s, one of our North Carolina players, upon graduating from college down here, served as aquatic director for the YMCA in Erie, where he promoted polo for several years before returning home. I myself officiated at a small tourney involving several high school boys teams at Reading in the mid 1980s. In summary, Pennsylvania has been a leader in water polo for many years and nowadays is one of only ten states that have state championship tourneys for both boys and girls. Incidentally, Coach Barren and I, now in our 70s, remain in touch regularly via email.

Look, man, if you really want to find out what's happening with water polo in Pennsylvania, contact Dr. Rudy Ruth, a school superintendent in Wilson, who's the water polo rep to the PIAA, and Tom Tracey, a leader for the American Water Polo Assoc., which is situated in the Philly area. The last I heard, Rudy's email address was RutRud@wilsonsd.org, and Tom's was tracey@americanwaterpolo.org. You're now on your own, 297, so get with it.

THere's no way of knowing if the PA teams are competitive outside of PA because by PA state regs they are no longer allowed to play club teams or the teams from the prep schools like Lawrenceville and Hill School. I heard they got tired of being beaten by the Navy club players so they shut that competition out.
